If you intend to build, renovate or repair a home in a Designated Bushfire Prone Area, you need to follow Australian Standard 3959-2018. This standard specifies the construction requirements on residential buildings for better fire protection. This ranges from construction measures that provide ember protection through to direct flame protection.

Bush Fire Attack Level Standards

In response to Victoria's devastating bushfires, the Victorian government introduced a new residential building standard. Click here to read: A guide to building in Victoria after the bushfires.

The aim of the new residential building standard is to:

  • improve the ability of a building to withstand a bushfire
  • provide greater protection for the occupants who may be sheltering in it while the fire front passes
  • to increase the chances of the building surviving the bushfire
