Do I need a permit for a shed in Victoria?
As required with any building structure, constructing a shed or garage may also require a permit. Shed or garage permit requirements vary according to location. Shed permits are necessary if the structure applies to any of the following:
More than 2.4m in height, or
Larger than 10m2 in area, or
Closer than 1m to a boundary, or
Attached to another building or structure
Do you need a permit to build a shed in your backyard?
For many regions, a building permit is required for outdoor structures that exceed a certain height. It is important to enquire about your local region’s criteria for obtaining a building permit for a shed. In most regions, installing a 6x8 or 8x8 shed will meet most building code requirements.
Other things to note when constructing a shed or garage:
Domestic sheds and garages in Victoria will often require a building permit. A registered building practitioner is required if the construction of the shed requires a building permit, includes supply and installation, is of a higher cost than $10,000, and you are not an owner-builder.
Domestic building insurance is required if the cost of work, materials and labour exceeds $16,000.
For work costing over $10,000, a major domestic building contract must be logged with the registered building practitioner.
Any installation of flashings, roof sheeting, guttering and other regulated plumbing work on a shed must be done through a registered or licensed plumbing practitioner.
